Hi guys!

So far we have looked at reported speech, words and meanings and now we are at cohesive devices.
2 questions for the day;

a. Why is reported speech important in day to day communication?
b. How does the knowledge of homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, hyponymy,  helps us to be better readers and writers?

  1. a. Language has two functions; to deliver messages and to negotiate relationship between a speaker and a listener. In my point of view, reported speech is important because it helps us to deliver messages to other people. When a speaker speaks to deliver messages, he or she often uses indirect sentences to convey the message clearly. In indirect speech, we do not use the exact words of the first speaker instead, we report what was said. Other than that, reported speech also allow us to see contrast between what a first speaker is saying and what the second speaker (reported) is thinking.
    b. To be a better reader.
    1. The knowledge of homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and hyponyms helps us to be a better reader. Most of the time, good writers will use different styles of writing to make their pieces more interesting and attractive. Thus, they may use homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and hyponyms. It is to vary their choice of words and also to expand vocabulary. Therefore, the knowledge of homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and hyponyms will allow a reader to understand what a writer is saying. This is because, to be a good reader, we must have a vast vocabulary.
    c. To be a better writer
    1. To be a better writer is easier said than done. It needs a lot of effort. A good writer will use different kind of writing style. They may use direct speech or indirect speech to make their pieces more fascinating. Other than that, they may use homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and hyponyms. These language styles help the writer to choose a better word and also to vary their choice of words. A good writer usually does not like to repeat words that they have used before. Thus, they may choose to use either antonym or synonym of the words. For example, instead of using “beautiful” for many times, a good writer may choose either “pretty”, “gorgeous” and etc to beautify their art work. Besides, the knowledge of homophones, homonyms and hyponyms helps the writer to make their pieces more stimulating.

  2. I agree with Hamzah's answer.
It's true that when we speak, we tend to use lots of indirect speech probably due to our culture. It's important for us to use reported speech in our daily communication as it's a part of higher English levels and in order for us to become a high-quality TESL teacher, it's a must have skill for us. It'll help us adjust our communication skills; to include expressing the ideas of others, as well as our own opinions. We'll also notice as we used it that not only that we focused on the grammar involved, we also focused on production skills. Although to master it is hard, but through lots of practice surely anyone will be able to do it.

The knowledge of homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, hyponymy, helps us to be better readers and writers in term of understanding the text better and making our writing easier to understand. These devices help the writer to convey their idea in text better. Think of it as other colour aside from black and white. If the writer lack the knowledge of using these devices, then his writing will only be black or white, without anything that could make it special but with the knowledge on how to use these device effectively, their text will be a mix of colours thus making it exciting, fun and easier for the readers to read. It's highly important devices as any reader would've need to have this knowledge before they can become a good writer.

  3. Reported speech allows people to understand the exact meaning, exact words, exact sentences, exact expression and tone of the message that the speaker tried to deliver. By using indirect speech, the speaker tends to change the words from the first speaker just to make the message easier to be delivered. Thus sometimes leads to a changing of meaning in the message. Direct speech helps to maintain the exact meaning of the message so that people who receive the message will understand the message properly.

Homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, hyponymy, help people to lighten their writing skills. The usage of all of these devices helps people to convey their message and ideas into their writing and challenged their mind by playing with words. Not only it lightens people to write, it also helps the readers to understand a text easier. Besides that, it also makes people writing more interesting instead of flat and boring, by using common style of writing and words. The used of these devices can injected interest and fun into the readers. (Just my opinion)

  4. I beg to differ to Haizat's opinion on the important of reported speech. As far as i concerned, reported speech does not change the meaning of a “direct speech”. It still maintain what the first speaker is saying as it is the rules of telling or writing a reported speech. Besides, reported speech does not use the exact tone of the first speaker. As an example, “I love you so~~ much”, said Hamzah (consider the “~~” as along sound) is a direct speech but if we wanted to transform it into a reported speech we will neglect the long sound, “Hamzah declared that he loved me very much.” Just an opinion!

  5. a) I think reported speech is important because it tells us how or what had happened in the past. Regardless of the details and else, its purpose is to retell the events in a simpler way. Means appropriate and easy to understand. Not by acting or saying the exact words the speakers have said. That would be, like, kind of weird and hard for people to 'digest' it. Just saying. :)

    b) In my opinion, homophones, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and hyponymy help us, as readers, to have a good vocabulary. I mean,
-the words that have the same
    meaning, or opposite
    - having the same pronunciation but
    different definitions
these are all vocabularies. It enhance a reader's perception towards a text. Actually, most people will get bored quickly if the same words are repeated again and again. I think that is why synonyms exist. Besides, it also help readers to have a better understanding of a text.
As for writers, it helps them to express their feelings, ideas and message trough words efficiently. It made a text much more interesting compare to the common ones. What was meant by common is a text that is, kind of uninteresting (==' can't think of other word) and 'flat' which I-or maybe others too-often found boring and not amusing. Besides that, writers will be able to portray their style of writing while playing with words in their works. (omg my grammar ==')So, I think it will help writers in enriching their vocabulary as well as making their works interesting. :)

  6. a. In my opinion, reported speech is important in our daily life because it helps us to convey a message from the first speakers to others. In our daily conversation, we tend to use it to add information when we are gossiping or having a conversation about a topic. It helps us to deliver the information that we have in a more understandable way rather than telling the actual conversation that we had with the first speakers.

    b.Better Readers:
The knowledge of these devices helps us to understand a text much easier. We can easily see the comparison, similarity, and how the writer styles of writing in a particular text. Besides, it also helps to make the text much more interesting in the sense that we can clearly see the play of words that being used based on these devices.

    Better Writers:
In my opinion, these devices helps to enlighten our writing. It helps us to make a variation in writing instead of having the same styles of writing all the way down until finished. It also helps us to be more aware about our choices of words during writing.

  8. a) in my opinion, reported speech is the way how people can get to transfer the knowledge, understanding or even stuffs such as gossip, new trends. So, it is important to people to learned or use the speech for daily communication, or for formal communication

    b) the techniques helps us to be more mature in words, by not using the informal words such as "lah", so in writing, we will directly overcome the informal words because we tend to think that we are talking when we are writing.

  10. a. Reported speech is important because it helps people with better understanding. It gets much easier to deliver information to one another through reported speech. Plus, daily conversations will be interesting and meaningful with the use of variations of reported speech.

    b. All of these five elements are the main core of best writings. They create maturity and high level of writing. Being a good reader by using those elements will create alive mood within the readers and building enthusiasm to finish the reading. Meanwhile, being a good writer will enhance every senses of alive mood to be inserted into the writing yet build up the maturity in terms of bombastic words and vocabulary. So, in order to be excellent at both reading and writing, one must implement all of these elements as they are important to create variations in the world of literature.

    in my opinion,
a)reported speech is the verbal phenomenon wherein a speaker attributes words or ideas to a previous speaker. Its role is not as straightforward as one might suppose.I suggest that the role of reported speech is twofold: to validate authority and to construct value.
it constructs and manipulates interaction in order to minimize differential identities. So the listener is easy to understand the conversation.
    b) those five elements will create such a wonderful piece of work. this is because it can persuade the audience. For instance, Martin Luther King's speech which is full of metaphor and those elements. it can create such a powerful speech that can alter the world. For the writer itself, it can create different styles of writing and the use of other wonderful words can attract people to read it over and over again.
