Cohesive Devices

Hi guys, had great fun watching your presentation. I was taken aback by the commitment and creativity you all showed on that day. I am very proud of all of you. My next question is how important are cohesive devices to a writer and a reader?
Think out aloud guys! See you soon.

  2. to a writer:

I think it is important because it connects words, making a sentence understandable and it can reduce the use of the same word again and again. The cohesive devices are grammatical, lexical and logical. In the grammatical section, writers will be able to avoid mistakes and deliver their messages properly. Meanwhile, hyponyms, synonyms and antonyms can be found in the lexical section. They tend to repeat general nouns without using the same word. That's the purpose of synonyms in some writings(and antonyms as well). This will help the writer to enrich his/her vocabulary and produce a better writings in the future. Whilst in the logical section, its function is to connect the ideas that the writer had told in the previous sentence or paragraph etc. as long as it's in the writing. Writer will be able to convey their message more clear by using logical connector. As an overall view, the cohesive devices can help a writer to produce a relevant, rich and a great work of writing.

    To the reader:

As for the readers, I think its vice versa. Or maybe the same..cohesive devices will help readers to understand the text or dialogue more easy. For example, the use of ellipsis, readers won't get bored of the text if they can really feel the dialogue and it sounded like real if they read it aloud. Another thing is readers will be able to think critically of a topic because of the repetitions and transitional phrases used. So, as an overall view also, readers can have a better understanding of a text and learn how to view a text or writing as a whole. It means they can catch and stay focus on the main issue discussed etc.

  3. Each language has its own patterns to convey the interrelationships of persons and events (Callow, 1974). To show the interrelationships, either the writers or the readers will certainly use cohesive devices. Cohesive devices are lexical, logical and grammatical. These devices help either the readers or the writers in many ways.
    Writers
In my opinion, cohesive devices give a lot of advantages to a writer. First and foremost, it allows a writer to choose a different word to describe something more precisely. As an illustration, a writer can use synonym to describe a thing or a writer can use logical connectors either to add information or giving example. Besides, cohesive devices allow a writer to write in a more understandable way. In addition, cohesive devices ensure the text to flow smoothly.
    Readers
Readers, on the other hand, are able to follow the given text more easily. Besides, as a reader, I personally tend to get bored but, with the help of cohesive devices such as Logical Connectors and Lexical Devices, the text can attract me more. Other than that, cohesive devices ensure a better understanding to the readers.
All things considered, cohesive devices do not bring us anything but advantages. It helps the writer to attract readers’ attention and gives the readers a better understanding towards the text.

  4. to the writers:

For me its simple. they want us to be able to understand their work and be entertained by it.

    to the readers:

As a reader, i want to be entertained by what i read. This is when cohesive devices becomes handy. Cut down unnecessary repetition and make the sentences logic.

  5. Writers:
In my opinion, cohesive devices help writers to vary their writings. By using cohesive devices, a writer can use different kind of words selection and ensure the flow of their writing runs smoothly. So, cohesive devices help writers to produce interesting, understandable and excellent work of writings.

    Readers:
Cohesive devices help the readers to have better understanding towards a writings. It also make a writings more interesting as the readers can see the play of words that being used by using cohesive devices.

  6. Hi, Sir!
This is what my head been juggling right after I read your post.. :)

    so for the readers,
The cohesive devices create the characteristic “feel” of a text. The continuity expressed by cohesion not only makes a text interpretable, it also provides it with its affective power. So,its some kind like giving you emotions that you can feel, for instance, sad, angry and others.
Equally important,it enables the reader to bring in all the missing things necessary for the interpretation of a text. In texts, especially in spoken texts, there are generally a lot of omissions and substitutions. Like what Sir mentioned the other day "face-to-face interaction, and their mutual understanding is made easier by their facial expressions, gestures, and other linguistic and non-linguistic contexts."
But in reading, the reader cannot appeal to the writer for the clarification of meaning. It is therefore necessary for him to supply the missing items himself and use these cohesive devices and fill it into the missing part of the text.

    as for the writers,
probably it just the same as the readers. what I've thinking is, if the writer uses lots of cohesive devices at the right place in the text, it can create the "feel" in the text itself and eventually helps the reader to form a mental picture or perhaps they could imagine what the writer talks about, isn't it? Honestly, I'm not a person who really loved to read,(but for the sake of exam, I'll make an exception, *giggles* ) yet whenever I read a written work with lots of "magnetising" words which are those cohesive devices specifically, synonyms, antonyms, and others.. then I guess, the writer was successfully done a great job!

Writing is a process of forming a text as a communicative connection between the reader and the writer (Seidlhofer & Widdowson, 1999).

    Thank You. :)

  7. hmmm~ again in my simple opinion...

Cohesive devices are single words or phrases that basically make the text connect to each other. They are much like our clothing which like shirts and trousers, we have to wear both of it. as i mention before, cohesive device as important as our clothing are. like the saying "dimana ada essay disitu ada cohesive device"

    have a nice day~

  8. The Writer

by using these devices, the writers will learn how to use all these devices as much as they can. the writer will be more creative in conveying its function.

    The Reader

An interesting essay will surely attract people to read. readers are always attracted to an essay with full of "entertaining" words in it.

  9. hello sir, in my opinion,

    1. The Writer
his/her writing will be more short, and straight to the point, without using any of flowery sentences/words. and also, the devices used also can be a good pump of adrenaline to make the reader feel better when reading it, especially when it comes to writing an essay of action or horror genre.

    2. The Reader
the same as my sentence above, it also makes the reader more understandable to read the essay, and thus creating a perfect mood for the readers to feel the essay.

  10. in my opinion , as to the writers :

simple, they want to convey something so that it would be more meaningful and understandable as cohesion connects a string of sentences to form a text rather than a series of unrelated statements...

    As to us readers :

By using cohesion, sentences are connected and related from one part to another part of the same text. Hence, it actually enables us readers to supply all the components of the picture to its interpretation. To put it simple, it actually helps readers to visualise things and at the same time creates mood while reading any written materials from all different kind of genres i.e horror, comedy, etc.

I think that's all from me.. ;) Aloha..!!
